Does anyone know how this even happens? My husband's paypal account was used to pay for an item on ebay. Only £40 but still. He's reported it through paypal but how do they do it? They bought something on ebay - which they didn't use my husband's account for - but used his paypal account to pay for it. They've even given their delivery address which is a residential address - this doesn't show as one of his registered paypal addresses. How do they do this? I can't understand how they can buy something from ebay but it not show on my husband's ebay account yet use his paypal account to pay for it, give a postal address and that address not show in his paypal addresses?

hacked into his paypal account rather than his ebay account?0

Paypal and Ebay accounts are separate from each other. They hacked his paypal account and used it to pay for their item on ebay and then probably sent a message to the seller asking them to post it their address.Emergency Fund - £8572.39 / £10,000 :: Mortgage OP 2025 - £LISA 24/25 - £3200 / £4000 :: NSD 2025 - 2 / 150 :: Books Read: 1 / 52 :: Decluttering - 4 / 1000Engaged 9th December 2010 :: Married 29th October 2015 :: Bought a House 13th January 20170

Change both Ebay and Paypal passwords and make sure you dont use the same password for both. Also enable 2-step login authentication on paypal0

Be careful as well as it means they have also hacked his email address, you can't add a new email address to paypal unless they get confirmation from the existing one. So someone has had access to his email to confirm the addition of a new address.
Once you have the paypal issue sorted out you need to urgently take steps to safeguard your email, as well as changing all passwords do a deep clean on the PC inc ase they have anything else as well. But on the paypal transaction, it has their address there - not added as a comment or anything.
I thought ebay and paypal accounts were linked but obviously not. It happened to me one before but I got the better end in that it was my account used to bid on all the items but not my paypal account to pay for them.
It just seems odd that they'd actually put their address (which I assume must be their address - especially as it's a residential address, they used my husband's name though).
Thanks. We've done all the safeguarding but I'm not sure my husband has changed his email password so I'll get him to do that.0 -
I strongly suggest that you consider how they got the information in the first place. It could have been a phishing email or a virus. In either case as a minimum I would install some internet security software, or if you already have this you should check that it's up to date.
ebay and paypal accounts are loosely linked but any paypal account can be used to pay for any ebay purchase, hence why your account could be used to pay for a purchase via another persons ebay account. It is after all just a payment method.
I would recommend you change your email password first then change your ebay and paypal passwords. Try to keep them different.0 -

You say this has happened to you once before, and in that case I suggest you either go to the tech board and get advice about keeping safe online, they are really helpful with anti virus suggestions, or read up about phishing mails.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. As andycris3107 says it is perfectly possible to have multiple addresses logged with PayPal, I have about 8 and if I want to buy something and have it delivered to my mother I just choose her address in PayPal.

Yes I know you can have multiple addresses linked to your paypal account (I have quite a few) but they are all listed so when I click to select the delivery address, all those addresses that I have previously used come up but this person's address isn't listed in his paypal addresses if that makes sense.
When it happened before, it was a good few years ago but my account was registered in my work email address so it must have been via that, rather than my personal one. I no longer work there so my account isn't registered to that anymore.0 -

It just means that someone has access to your PayPal account , hence the need to get advice about Internet security.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
