Moving House
I have just joined the forum and hoping that you kind people can help.
I currently purchase my gas and electricity from First Utility on their "iSave Fixed April 2017" tariff but I am moving house and had assumed my account would move with me. Apparently this is not the case my current account has to be closed and a new one started at my new property. I expect this is also means I will have to pay the £60 early termination fee.
With this in mind I thought it was an ideal time to reappraise the best packages especially since Martin had been alerting me to better deals. His site advices me that "Extra Energy" offers the best deal and based my usage over the twelve months will cost £1112 per annum £93 per month. It goes on to inform that my current supplier is charging me £1476 per annum £123 per month. This is not the case I am actually paying £900 per annum £75 per month. Last year I actually used £776.33 worth in total and based on the fixed tariff I am currently paying I have calculated I will use £930.34 worth of gas and electric and if I swap to the standard non fixed tariff with my current supplier I will pay less. My usage over the last 12 months is 3040 KWhrs of electricity with a current cost of 14.711p per unit and 8192 KWhrs of gas with a current cost of 4.13p per unit. The daily charge currently is 19.845p each.
I am probably not calculating it correctly but I can't see where I am wrong. If anyone can explain the anomaly to me I would be extremely grateful.

So far as 'Early Termination' fee's are concerned, moving home is the one thing that they cannot be charged for.
At the new home, you must register your occupancy with the existing supplier and give them the meter readings on the day you move in - Once registered and in reciept of their Welcome Pack, you are free to move to any other supplier you wish.
Also make sure you give FU your meter readings on the day you move out of your present home.
Running tariff checks when you are about to move out is something of a waste of time - Spend the effort on trying to predict your consumptions in the new home
Whilst your style of living habits may be the same in the new house as the old, the energy bills will be different as it is a different building - Better or worse insulation? Larger or smaller? Type and age of heating system ?0 -

[FONT=Comic Sans MS, cursive]I am hoping to reduce my usage. I am moving from a three bedroom semi detached to a middle terrace timber frame house. I have had central heating fitted with the latest Worcester Bosch boiler and in the process of insulating the loft. The house has a conservatory and so the heat drain there is going to be signifiant, I am going to have the roof changed from polycarbonate to glass and so that should be a help and we probably wont use the conservatory to much in the winter.[/FONT]

In what way would a glass roof help your energy consumption? - it will make it worse unless it's double or triple glazed. Tri-wall polycarbonate will be more effective than glass at reducing heat loss.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0

As I understand it the polycarbonate alternative now has 5 or even 7 air gaps which offers improvement in U factor. However glass is double glazed with an argon gas filling which is what improves it's insulating properties above polycarbonate.0 -

Not making much progress with replacing the credit meters at my new property.
My current supplier (First Utility) don't want to know until they get my final readings at my current property. They have however advised me that I can only avoid the £60 early termination fee if I sign up with them again on the same tariff I am on now. I can save about £170 per annum by switching suppliers but with oil prices predicted to start going up again by the middle of next year am I better staying with my existing tariff which is fixed to 2017.

Hi Ken and welcome to the Forums.
Hope the renovation's going ok and isn't too stressful. Thought I'd pop on with some information about these changeovers.
Now you've given us the date you took over responsibility for the new property, we'll open an account from this time and send you a Welcome Pack. This pack will have details of the tariff as well as our terms and conditions. It'll be with you within 5 working days of you telling us you're now responsible.
If you gave us meter reading for this day, we'll use them to start your account. Helps keep things accurate.
As there's currently prepayment meters in place, there's only the one tariff available. There aren't any exit fees or ties-ins with this tariff so you're free to change supplier whenever you wish without penalty.
I'm sorry progress is slow with the meter exchange. I know the meter guys are very busy at this time of year.
Provided you pass a credit check, we'll change the meters free of charge. This will open up more tariffs both with us and with the other suppliers.
If you're changing supplier, I'd suggest going on to our standard credit tariff after the meter exchange. Not necessarily the cheapest but, like the prepayment tariff, it's free of exit fees and tie-ins.
It's great you're looking to save energy. We can help with this. Have a look at the 'Saving Energy' part of our website. There's various tips to help you save money by saving energy. The quiz is a bit of fun and quite useful. Look out for those energy sucking vampire appliances, too, using electricity when on standby.

I await your welcome pack and tariff details. Do you require a meter reading from the prepayment meters or the new credit meters when installed?

Glad the renovations are going well.
The engineer swapping the meters will take a closing reading from the prepayment meter and a start reading from the credit meter. Usually, the engineer will put these readings on a label and attach it to the new meter. For your own peace of mind, I'd keep a record of these readings. It doesn't do any harm to keep all the bases covered.
Once we receive the readings, the prepayment meter will be removed from your account and replaced with the new credit meter.
Before this, there's quite a bit of information that needs to be shared with third parties like the regional distributors, meter readers, national databases etc. This can take a few weeks to go through. Don't worry, once done, you'll be billed from the date of the meter exchange using the readings taken when the job was done.
