I've just bought a house...

I've never previously bought or rent and I'm looking at gas, electric and water and I don't have a clue.

The previous owner had British Gas but I don't know if there the cheapest or how to work out how to find the cheapest.

I'm a single person living in a 2-bed terrace.

Anyone any advice?

For gas and electricity initially you have no choice but to use the existing supplier(BG) to the property as you are on a legally binding 'deemed contract' with that supplier.


With water you have no choice - a water company supplies all properties in their catchment area.


You firstly need to contact BG and the water company ASAP with your details and meter readings(assuming water is metered)


You can then take steps to change your gas/electricity tariff if you wish. Do this by using a comparison website and enter an annual kWh figure for consumption. You will just have to guess your consumption. - try 10,000kWh gas and 4,000kWh electricity.
