Can anybody suggest why my wireless laptop-connection-to-router is quicker using my phone as a tether rather than laptop's own wifi? The phone is definitely using the same wifi. Strange.

are you sure? because i cant tether to my phone while using wifi? if i tether it always used the phones 3G0 -
Are you sure your not using the phones internet connection instead of your home broadband?
In some areas my phone had a faster download speed than my old broadband.
If you are 100% using wifi then the wireless chip in your laptop is an older slower one. Or not configured correctly.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Ah - didn't realise that. That may explain it :-)glentoran99 wrote: »it [tethering] always used the phones 3G
EDIT: I'd better confirm. If you use tethering then this, by definition, will use the mobile connection rather than (the phone's) wifi connection?0 -
then youll have another question, Why is your broadband slower than 3G!!0

Yes. All tethering will go through the mobile data network and not your router.glentoran99 wrote: »then youll have another question, Why is your broadband slower than 3G!!
This is more common than you would think. At home I have fibre broadband so always use Wi-Fi. If it stay at a mates house or overnight somewhere 70% of the time I'll not bother with their Wi-Fi and use mobile data as it's always faster.
The average 3G speed in the UK is 6.1Mbps, which is usually faster (sadly) then most peoples broadband up here on the borders0 -
If i could get 3G to do 6.1Mbps then I would definitely use that rather than my broadband! 6.1Mbps seems a distant dream on my broadband. And as for a 3G signal, I seem to see sometimes when I am out and about, I'm lucky to get a 2g signal at home.“Time is intended to be spent, not saved” - Alfred Wainwright0
