  • It was a long time ago when i was 19.

Things were different then, only youngsters with rich parents had new cars, in practice those with rich parents didn't really rub shoulders with working class lads.

Luckily cars were (if they didn't rot overnight) simple to fix, and without all the H&S rubbish you could wade around muddy scrapyards in your wellies to your hearts content for bits to keep your old banger going, getting someone else to fix it was unheard of.

Learning like this has paid dividends for my generation, by buying cars two or three models behind and keeping them going with self taught skills weve saved a fortune over the years.

It's still a valid way of motoring and has a massive bonus, you get to drive cars that are capable and interesting, not the latest cloned eurobox.

They don't have to be too expensive to run either, 6 and 8 cyl motors with proper auto boxes and fitted with an LPG kit can make fun fast cheap reliable motoring...i've got two LPG'd cars both 6 pots that cost about the same to run as a Diesel hatchback, both cars unusual interesting competent and fast.

Just some food for thought there BrookesAndrew, well done for listening to the advice in good spirit.
