NewLook Store Card Account Closed but can still used?

Can anyone give me any advice.

At the end of June purchased some shoes from New Look and paid for them on my New Look card. Started wondering where my statement was as previous statements usually had to be paid by 20th of the month.

Decided to phone up and check my account over the phone - got transfered to a call center where I was told my account was no longer activated (hadn't been used in a while) I explained to them that I recently made a purchase yet they kept telling me this didn't matter as my account was closed and I wouldn't receive a statement.

Surely I must still owe them for my last payment? I don't want to be charged extra for not paying and a quick look at my last statements (I really didnt realise it had been so long since I used my card) suggest that I was in credit due to an error they had made does this mean that this money is also lost?

Any suggestions for what to do next? Ideally I want to settle what I owe and then cancel the card for good but by the sounds of it GE Capital believe the account is already closed.

  • How much were you in credit for?? Did this credit cover your debit spend??

If yes, then you shouldnt need to make a payment, if no -- You WILL need to make a payment and i suggest you keep phoning for a response otherwise this is likely to have an adverse affect on your credit history

If you credit more than covered the debit purchases, then New Look owe you money and you should request this to be returned.

Hope all goes well and continue to post for advice

  • GE Money do not finance New Look and have not done so for over a year. The New Look account number that you gave over the phone relates to an account that you had with GE Money before New Look transferred their finance company. GE's card is not able to be used instore and you wouldn't have been able to use it at the end of June. This card is financed by a different company. Look on the back of the card to see if there's a customer services address.

Simler thing happened with my Burton (GE Money) store card last year. Hadn't used it for about 6 months and then tried to use it in a Burton store only to be told it wouldn't go through. I explained I didn't owe any money on it and that I hadn't used it for a while. The sales assistant then told me that cards that are not used for a while are automatically closed. I wasn't convinced by that as I had never been told by GE Money that it had been closed. So a week later I used at Burton's online store and it worked! and it's worked instore and online ever since. I think they must temporarily freeze accounts that have not been used in a while.
  • Yes, accounts that aren't used in a while are offlined for security purposes. The store are able to call and get it reactivated - they don't normally though because they use it as an excuse to get you to take out a new card and therefore meet their targets.

Yes. they did the excuse by asking if I wanted to try and open a new account. I just said no thinking of having credit searches put on my file unnessisarily.
