It would usually pay an amount but the exact amount is done via a calculation. That calculation will probably differ from insurer to insurer.

I am going to give the information to the broker who found me our mortgage. He told us to think about what sort of policy we were after and he would be able to get us some products to look at. He managed to find us a great mortgage product when every bank/BS we walked into turned us down. The deal we got is better than most people we know who were better placed to obtain one.
He is a mortgage advisor who does other products so hopefully he will be just as good for other products.
