The future of branches?

  • For personal banking, I haven't set foot in a branch for years. However I work in a shop and have to pay in the cash takings - if all the bank branches close, how would shops do this? (I'm thinking of smaller shops with lower takings, not the ones who have security vans to collect it)

You assume that cash will continue to be an important way to make payments in the future. It will probably be for another 20-30 years but increasingly there won't be a need for cash any longer.

More importantly, the ability to take cash deposits doesn't warrant each of the banks to have a bricks and mortar presence. There are already machines that take cash, and there's no reason why you shouldn't have a finance mart with a cash machine that lets you deposit cash into your accounts with any of the banks. It will probably come at a charge, but then most banking transactions will be chargeable before long.
