Pupil makes £14k selling sweets in the playground

I'm not sure I agree with the sentiments of most posters.
He's making money because he's breaking the rules.
In the big wide world outside school, that would be equivalent to making money by breaking the law (e.g. selling illegal drugs, smuggled cigarettes etc.)
The school rules are that unhealthy food is banned. If the school sold unhealthy foods, and lots of other pupils sold them as well, there would be real competition, and this boy would make much less money.
He makes money because he breaks the rules whilst everyone else sticks to the rules.0 -
The school have this spot on. Breaking school rules cannot be accepted or where do people draw the line.
As he is obviously running a business has he spoken to the taxman etc. Does his income affect houshold income for any benifits being claimed etc.
I suspect that this has not been fully thought through but could be wrong.0 -
In my day, the kids selling sweets were the shoplifters!
Anyway, the school is right imo. £14k/year is hundreds of pounds a week profit, or thousands of pounds of sweets turnover every week!
It's not something the school could over look and at that level the suspicion is he's pushing sweets onto kids. "Take the mars bar, pay me tomorrow". etc. etc. Other parents would be complaining about what their kids are spending their money on- sweets being flogged in the classroom.
Schools aren't somewhere you go to flog stuff. Whatever happens in school grounds must be controlled by the school because it's their responsibility. £14k/year is out of control.
If he wants to run a business, he can do it away from school.0 -
As long as he is buying the sweets instead of nicking them I cant see anything wrong myself. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

School is the 'state' here. They are peeved at him because he's competing with their canteen, tuck shop IMO.
I think he's brilliant personally.
I used to buy and sell dinner tokens in high school. That was a good earner.0
