    I think the recipe varies from region to region. I actually know this despite never having 'cooked' anything proper in years :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Ours was simple because we didn't own scales.

    1 tin of condensed milk
    2lb bag of sugar
    Whole block of butter
    few drops of vanilla essence

    put it all in a pan at once and bring to the boil. Turn down to simmer. It's ready to put in trays when you put a teaspoon full in a cup of cold water and it turns to the consistency of soft caramel :D

    ETA forgot to add to grease the tray
