Courier Insurance

Last year there was a thread on here by 'diamondgeeza' ref: difficulty in getting courier insurance working for Hermes. I was wondering what the outcome of this thread was and if anyone has found a 'strictly legal' way of obtaining this insurance.....

Can the courier company advise you what their other drivers use?
  • Most decent courier companies (I don't include Herpes in this) have arrangements in place to provide cover at a reasonable cost.
  • Hermes do a "top up" policy ( provided by QBE ) that covers couriers on a 3rd party only basis, while they are actually delivering for Hermes.

The couriers "main" insurer may not be happy with this arrangement though.

I looked into doing this to earn a bit of extra income but the insurance is a bit of a problem. Simply adding "courier" as a part time or main occupation has a dramatic effect on premiums it seems.

I suspect many people don't actually tell their insurers and take a chance.

Same here. I read that there was insurance, but when I was interviewed I found that basically it covers the legal minimum and if you're in a crash you may have to foot a heavy repair bill on your own vehicle. I asked the field manager if she knew of anywhere I could insure my car for the work and she said it was down to the individual contractor to sort that out and she didn't know.

I suspect that while Hermes couriers are legal they may be risking their vehicles.

I have found an insurer which is merely more expensive. Went and spoke to a local broker face-to-face and she arranged cover for me with the correct terms. It can be done.
  • Herps and Yodel always advertising locally for "self employed" couriers to earn up to £50 a day (yeah right). Obviously after you have taken fuel and insurance costs out of it you'll be left with nothing + a knackered car.

From what I have seen a lot of the people doing this kind of work are doing it purely to cover the HP payment. A bit like those that deliver Chinese meals.

And a significant number are probably using their or a relatives Motability car.

Has she arranged a policy which describes the type of use as "Haulage"

If it's cheap then that's what she has done and it's unlikely to be accepted by the police or the Insurer if you claim

I don't think many back street takeaway drivers take out the correct food delivery insurance, if they did they would be way out of pocket.

It's only the the chains like Dominos that have the right cover.
