DLA child?

Remember that DLA is not intended to reward or compensate a parent for doing what you feel that they should do as a parent. It is supposed to help meet the costs of additional needs caused by their condition, some of which may not be apparent yet. My friends' daughter is 10 years old and autistic. She needs constant supervision, cannot use public transport (she reacts badly in crowds and loud noises) and severe speech problems. Her DLA pays for taxis and additional/complementary treatments which she feels help her daughter but are not available on the NHS - private speech therapy for example.0 -
I found filling in the DLA forms quite difficult.., you keep yourself going by being optimistic and hopeful but you have to fill in these forms, listing the extra things you do for your child that you wouldn't expect to do normally for a four year old. And you have to face the negative bits, which is difficult.
However, it is a little bit of extra money (and getting DLA mid rate care also entitles you to extra tax credits money). Yes, its only money but it really does help me provide the extras my now much older son with ASD needs. Without it, he had the same needs and much as I loved him I couldn't find the money to provide what was needed (I still remember when he went through a stage of eating only shop bought sandwiches no matter what else I tried to provide and going through every pocket, my settee to try and find the money because I had nothing in my purse - I was living on toast at the time). Transport costs are also another one, without help with that, it would be very difficult.
You won't enjoy filling in the form, but do it, as it will enable you to meet the extra expenses involved in caring for your child. You will get over how it makes you feel when you see your child's needs being met in a way you couldn't before.0
