Backpacker Insurance policy When Already Abroad...?

Morning all,

My son has been travelling for a year (currently in Sydney with no realistic "due home date" and his backpacker insurance has expired. The company it was with (Direct Line) won't extend as its expired and as he's not in the UK at the start of a new policy they won't insure him from scratch either.

I've been looking on the internet without much success, as anyone I've heard of has the same rules around the policy must start with the holder in the UK.

Has anyone else been in this situation and can you recommend any companies that might take on backpacker insurance without the policy holder being in the UK at the time of the policy commencing ?

Many thanks in advance

Bez

  • I looked at these two when my son was in the same situation.

Mr Straw described whiplash as "not so much an injury, more a profitable invention of the human imagination—undiagnosable except by third-rate doctors in the pay of the claims management companies or personal injury lawyers"

  • Thanks for the replies, very helpful went with "True Traveller" in the end

Thanks for pointing me to True Traveller-much cheaper than Nomad. Previously Nomad had been the only one that covered those already travellers. Find it rather expensive and the coverage isn't the best. Youngest daughter did a claim for a street robbery in Vietnam and that wasn't the simplest claim procedure-will have to see whether she gets anything back. Might be worth pointing out that UK citizens in Australia qualify for the health system. Need to apply for what I think is called the Medicaid card. Eldest is in Canada on a Working Holiday visa and she's qualified for the Canadian Medicaid equivalence

Just adding to what was mentioned above: to get the Medicare cover, you need to go to a Medicare office with your passport and apply for the Reciprocal Health Care Medicare card. It's free, and they post it to you (providing you have a temporary Australian address), but they also print you a receipt that contains your account number which means you can use it from Day 1.

In reply to the other part, I'm about to get insurance with True Traveller for the rest of my trip, as it seems to be the best and reasonably cheap. I'd love to hear any reviews of them, either good or bad...
  • We're in a similar catch 22. Our son is about to go back to Oz. Holiday safe would have extended if he'd been less than 21 days back in the UK, but as it was longer they won't, and as he was away for more than 6 months of the previous 12 he can't start a new policy either. READ THE SMALL PRINT, PEOPLE.

Anyway, thanks for the tips, looks like we'll have to wait till he gets back there and go with the best of the above.

Are you refering to the six months many Travel Insurers stipulate that you have to be a "UK resident" immediately prior to cover starting?

If so other Insurers do not stipulate you are not a UK resident if you have been abroad in for more than six months in the last year
