Things you do whilst visiting a ward. Be very aware that you are bringing in a large amount of bacteria on your shoes,clothing, and HANDS in with you. Use the gel supplied in the containers to clens your hands every visit. Do not sit on the bed do not put clothes or bags on the bed, Be aware that when you kiss or cuddle the patient you are transfering bugs to them. The elderly are very susceptable to C Diff .. Costridium difficile a very nasty bug which is KILLING elderly people at an alarming rate this is the (new superbug). Put a sign up above the bed requesting medical staff wash their hands before they touch you(if a patient) please don't worry about offending them, better that than death through avoidable infection. Finaly if you are not satisfied with the cleanliness of the ward or bed enviroment speak out inform the staff and they will chase the cleaners, and do inform the Infection control team yourself.
I am not medical staff just someone who has been visiting my old mum who has been in hospital for 7 months because of re-occuring infections, and boy have I learnt a lot about this subject.
