Wordpress SEO Plugin to get google first page rankings?

Hello all,
Im here asking for help and advice on my website. I designed it over a year ago, it took me a year after to find out about SEO and get an idea of what it does, however im self taught and can only learn so much from videos on youtube, I choose a wordpress plugin called "Platinum-SEO" and have played around with meta tags and descriptions, I managed to get on googles second page for two of my most important seach phrases for my website. Im not sure ive choose the best SEO plugin can anyone please recommend free Plugins on wordpress that will help me achieve first page google rankings.

A plugin is only going to do so much, I don't even have an SEO plugin for my wordpress site, yet the site ranks for several search terms on page 1 and 2 of major search engines.

Thank you but I believe my website may need the extra boost a good SEO plugin may offer, some people use yoast plugin for example.
I run a scrap metal recycling and removals business in london, and i do have abit of competition to get on the first page for those search phrases.
Does any body use a wordpress seo plugin thats better than Platinum SEO?

Content, content, content with the keywords in it and back links from other sites. Thats the most important thing to get a higher ranking. Everything else is just tweaking it a little bit. Not even the meta.description is used by Google for the snippet any more. It's taken from the content around the searched word.

Can you advise on any places to start with good quality backlinks?
Ive made a start with ukfreeindex, also twitter and facebook, linkedin, gumtree, not sure if these places are any good but am I on the right track, ive also gone back into my site and played about with the content abit, apparently its good to do this on a regular basis.
