Residential Status?

Options
Hello,

I'm in the middle of doing some financial spring cleaning, and I'm looking at applying for another credit card, so I can do a balance transfer and move it onto a cheaper rate and clear it completely.

I'm not sure what to put for my residential status on the application, as the house and mortgage are in my husband's name.
In a previous job I used to do finance applications, and I was advised by the finance company we used to put 'private tenant', when I came across a similar thing putting through an application, but in that case it was for an unmarried co-habiting couple.

I'm assuming I would need to do the same, but I'm not sure!

Does anyone know?

Thank you!

  • I think people tend to put renting in this case, I'm not 100% sure though.
Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.

ALWAYS HAVE A DIRECT DEBIT SET UP FOR THE MINIMUM PAYMENT ON YOUR CREDIT CARDS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU PLAN TO LOGIN AND PAY EACH MONTH.

You're married. Barring unusual circumstances that means that you have a shared ownership interest in the house and hence are a homeowner.

I'm sorry but I can't remember what I put but I live with a long term partner (not married, no financial association) and have been on electoral register at the house for 10 years or so - she owns the house and I pay rent unofficially (as in not a proper tenant) and I had no issue getting CC from Amex/Sainsburys/Barclaycard, good luck with it :)

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
