Quick RAM question

This may seem a little painstaking, but it's best to work methodically to get to the bottom of the problem....
1. Remove all the old RAM & install only the new 1Gb stick in the first slot - Slot0/1/I or similar (this will be marked on the motherboard). Then boot up the PC. If it shows 1Gb, then we know that this is compatible & working fine. If it doesn't, let us know - & do not go to the next step.
2. If the above went fine, keep the 1Gb where it is & install the two other sticks one at a time in the remaining slots, starting with the central one. Reboot each time. If they show up as 1.25Gb, then 1.5Gb - you're sorted.
If the new module still shows up as <1Gb, or the others are not recognised/appear lower in size, there could be a number of reasons for this. You'll need to provide us some additional info, about the motherboard, RAM, etc. I'll specify what these are if you get back with problems. G
A few instructions whilst installing/swapping the RAM modules that you may find useful:
a. Make sure the system is switched off & power disconnected from the mains
b. Try to hold them with their plastic edges as far as possible, & keep yourself in contact with any metallic part of the case to 'ground' yourself (to avoid possible static damage)
c. Make sure they're slotted in completely (the right way round) & both the retaining clips are fully engaged for each
d. Keep the case opened during the installs/swaps, but do not touch or move anything inside when the PC is running0 -
OK - tried the 1GB stick on it's own in both slots - still showing up as a 512MB stick.
The motherboard is a VIA KM226 (according to Crucial anyway).:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

To determine compatibility between the motherboard & RAM, please let us know:OK - tried the 1GB stick on it's own in both slots - still showing up as a 512MB stick. The motherboard is a VIA KM226 (according to Crucial anyway).
1. The motherboard make & model number (VIA KM226 is the 'chipset').
Download, install & run Everest. In the program > Motherboard > Motherboard > Motherboard name (in the right pane).
2. The RAM make & model number. Just post everything that's on the sticker - if no sticker, then everything that's on the chips.
If it's from Crucial/other retailer, contact their support. If it's from eBay: you may have been sold half the capacity (it has happened to me), purchased high-density memory, or a double-sided module when the motherboard is compatible with single-sided only.

Sorted - the guy e-mailed me and said I'd been sent a module with the wrong sticker on it. I've only been sent a 512MB stick instead of a 1GB stick.
He's going to sort it out depending on what I want to do.
Thanks to all for all the help.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:
