Looking for an Android YouTube client suitable for restricted profile

Can anyone recommend a youtube client app that will support subscribed channels / playlists that work on a restricted profile? My kids have various channel subscriptions and videos on playlists saved on my youtube account, but when I open youtube app on their child profiles on their xmas pressie hudls I can't sign in to an account, which means I can't set up their favourites / subscriptions etc.

I know there are plenty of 3rd party iOS apps for youtube - the pro version of Jasmine for iPad would be awesome as it has great parental controls too, but afaik it's not available on android.

Any help would be much appreciated :)

Edited to add: I'd prefer a free app (obvs!) but happy to pay for a fully featured app too that does what I need it to

    I don't understand.....

Or rather maybe you don't understand?

You need a Google account to link to your Android tablet, this account is also for Youtube, Google Play, Google+ and Email.

Subscriptions and favourites are set the same as the web based Youtube (which is again linked to a Google account), just log into the tablet with the Google account and the Youtube app sorts itself out according to that accounts preferences.

  • Thank for your reply - sorry if I've not been clear. I do understand YouTube accounts, and know how subcriptions and playlists etc work.

Let me try and explain the problem I have more clearly...

Android devices now support a 'parent' profile which has full access to all apps etc and kind of has administrator privileges, and restricted profiles, which the tablet owner can set up for other users. Within the 'parent' profile you can control which apps the other user profiles can access, what websites they can visit, whether they can download new apps etc (see more here).

These restricted profiles are perfect for parents who want to allow children to use a tablet, but want to limit what they can do. Indeed we have bought hudl2s for our kids for xmas (thanks v much clubcard points!) and we are in the middle of installing apps for them and setting up their profiles on the tablets.

The problem is that the YouTube app does not support account log-in on restricted profiles. So when I'm on the tablet in the main 'parent' profile, I can log in to my youtube account just fine, see my favourites etc no problem.

However once you switch to the restricted profile then open the youtube app, you cannot log in to your account, as YouTube does not allow this at the present time.

So back to my original question - I'm looking for a third party app that accesses my youtube account and pulls through my playlists / favourites / subscriptions etc so that I can access all of these things while in the restricted profile.

Hope this makes things clearer and that someone can help

    Thanks :)

In that case, you could use Youtube in browser, by downloading Firefox (or others) and avoiding the app altogether. This allows you to log in with existing credentials separate from the Android OS.

As far as usefulness and functionality goes, I rank the app last, the mobile website second and the proper full website a clear first.

  • Thanks for your help Strider. I'm after an app really, as I said it's for my kids so that'd be simpler for them to use rather than using a browser, particularly as they'll then have to log in with a google account themselves to access their videos. However it's definitely a good backup plan, I shall check tonight whether or not you can still log in via the website when you're using a restricted profile.

What I'm really after is something like this which I saw recommended here, but this app doesnt appear to be available in the UK, and again I'm not sure if it'd work on a restricted profile

Anyone else got any ideas or recommendations?

I'm unclear why you would want to look at the full YouTube offering while you're in the restricted profile, surely the whole point of logging in with that profile is not to be able to access everything? Why can't you just log in with an unrestricted profile when you do want to access everything? To my simple mind you seem to be overcomplicating things.

You see, i'm dead against that sort of thing, I don't think technology and IT should be simplified. I work with people who don't even know how to use standard windows shortcut keys, these people are 25-45 years old and as soon as anything goes wrong, they don't have the first clue what to do. They have this thing for tabbed browsing and tabs in access databases, which just adds more clicks to every job they do and makes my job much more long winded than it needs to be. I think people should learn, I don't think we should ever pander to their lack of ability, regardless of age.

    Just my opinion ;)
