What Will happen If He Moves In?!

Hi i'm a single mum on income support, i have a boyfriend (not my children's father) but we would like to live together. He does not work, and doesn't claim benefits, he lives off his own father (long story) but he is willing to work. Anyway, i'm starting a full-time college course in september, so allowing him to live with me would be a help as i would let him look after my children while i'm at college, saves me having to find childcare as its getting abit late now!!

I just want to know where i stand, if i tell the council and benefits agency that he is moving in will all my benefits stop or what?!! also how much notice do i have to give them that he will be moving in?!

Another question, i'm still living in temporary accomodation, if he moves in will i be taken off the housing list too?! surely the council can not chuck me out?!

I've tried ringing the CAB but its always engaged!!

Thank you in advance.

You would get income support as a couple and nothing else would change - but he would have to give up the money from his father (depends how much it is) as it would be 'other unearned income'. You would need to re claim housing benefit and council tax benefit which would be allowed due to a low income, so it really hinges on how much he gets from his dad. Tax credits (child) would be the same - but not working tax credits as nobody is working.

ok thank you, if we are on income support together is he still able to look for work (he would obviously look for part time to fit around my college) or would we have to claim job seekers as a couple? sorry for all the questions.

oh and his dad doesn't give him money each week, he just feeds him really and gives him a roof over his head.

and also, i didn't think you were allowed to claim income support as a couple?! no one has told me that but i just presumed it? i just thought it was for single mums!
  • You can claim Income Support as a couple, although they would probably pay Income Based Jobseekers Allowance if he is seeking work.
If he's not recieving money off his father, then that wouldn't have to be declared.
