Help PPI and terminal cancer

Really sorry if i have done this wrong but I just need some help and advice.
My partner is suffering for terminal cancer. He has a very rare form of cancer. When he found out he had to retire from Fire and Rescue where he worked as instructor he went to the bank to claim his PPI on the loan he has been paying off. The bank informed him he was longer longer covered BY PPI as they do not offer PPI any longer. The fact they had not informed him was an over-site on their part which they have admitted verbally and they blamed it on new members of staff not knowing anyone still wanted PPI ( in witting). After much letter writing and complaining The bank have refused to refund his PPI or help him in any way .
We have taken this to the Ombudsman who has written back to say this case is complex and could take over two years to solve. my partner may not have two years as at the moment they saying a year to 18 months. He is in the process of sorting out his pension but since he has been ill and on sick pay he has had to pay over 3,000 back on a loan he thought he had paid PPI for. Is there anything else i can do? This is a very difficult time for us i have had to cut my work hours as a lecturer to care for him. This is a time that he should be making the best of what he has left but we are both worried sick. i seemed to have spent months on a pc trying to get this sorted out. I am new to this so have no idea if anyone can help me or how to see any replies. Many thanks to any one who can help.

    Sorry to hear your sad news. If it's any help, my friend's husband was in the middle of sorting out a PPI claim when he was diagnosed with a terminal disease, and he died before it was settled. However, the executor of his will wrote to the company and explained the situation and it was paid out quite quickly.
    Make sure he's made a will. Good luck.
  • Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do to hasten any payout (if the Ombudsman actually upholds the complaint). Any money which is eventually refunded would go to your partner's estate, so it won't be lost if that is your concern.

    I suppose you could ask the Ombudsman if there is any possibility of "jumping the queue" given the circumstance-but this really is one only the Ombudsman can answer for you.

    You beat me to it. I was going to say they can and will treat it as a priority case in exceptional hardship circumstances and this case clearly qualifies.

    I would suggest that you would be best served not by seeking a refund of the premiums paid but by asking that they honour the claim. They have admitted that you were not told that the cover had been cancelled and therefore you had every reason to believe you were still insured. As a result, the cover should make the loan repayments and as there is sadly no prospect of his returning to work, should pay off the whole account.
  • Never mind the PPI for now.

    He will be awarded a pension which - and there is no easy way to say this - will die with him unless you are legally married to him.

    If you are married, you will then receive a pension of half his pension, inflation proofed.

    As CathA says, he also needs to make a will, but it would be invalidated by a marriage unless it specifies it is made in anticipation of that marriage.
