Induction fault

Hello. I have a Toledo 90 induction. I appear to have a fault, which nobody has heard off, and I cannot find any reference on the internet. I have phoned Ringmaster, who say if I pay £165 they will repair any fault(even multiple faults).
The problem is that one of the rings does not turn on, BUT, sometimes even when it is OFF, if I put a pan or kettle on it, it will actually begin to boil the kettle for instance. It actually put a hole in the kettle, which had no water in it.(we didn't know it had the fault at the time). Has anybody ever heard of such a problem?????

Logic dictates the on/off switch has defaulted to on.

its a traditional dial switch. Sometimes when it is off, and the dial is set to 0. The heat setting will show it at 6 or 8 or whatever, and it will boil my kettle...

Like I said, it seems like a simple electrical fault, the switch, rather than anything induction related. Power has to pass the switch to operate the heater, if the circuit is broken at the switch as it should be when off, it can't heat unless there is a live short circuit to the ring.

Does the knob pull off? It could be the flat part on the round inner part is worn causing the knob to rotate to zero but the inner part is not rotating.

You usually get an error message if it is switched on without a pan or kettle on the hob.

Hi thanks guys. It's not the knob..I just pulled it off and switched it with others etc etc. I just had a play with. I turn it, and it goes up to 9 as it should. I turn it back, and it stops at its relevant numbers. I then put it to 0 and it stays at 0. Then it flicks to 1, and you hear the kettle buzz. It then moves to A, then perhaps to 4 and the back to 0, all without any interaction from myself. I then take the kettle off and the light goes out, I put the kettle back on and nothing happens. Very strange and very intermittent.

  • In that case you need someone to look at it.

Yes I think you are correct. Don't want to go around messing with electricity. Do you think a fee of £165 is reasonable, and they will fix as many faults as I have.(think this is starting to go on another ring), or would an independant be better. I see curry charge a flat fee of £99. I assume they all just sub contract the work out anyway, so is it best to cut out the middleman.
