Paying Solicitors Fees Before Completion?

I'm close to exchange (I think!) on my first purchase, and have received a "Completion Statement" from my solicitors requesting transfer of funds.
The statement has combined the deposit with the solicitors fees - is it normal to pay the fees prior to completion?
So far they have provided a fairly poor service so I'm feeling a little cautious.
Thanks

Most solicitors won't allow you to complete until you've paid them, so yes it's normal.Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0

If you need a mortgage it's a "CML Handbook" requirement that cleared purchase funds, fees and stamp duty be in the solicitor's hands prior to completion.I am a mortgage broker.
