....and your point is? You can spout all the science you want, however, if someone can't tell the difference in a home environment then something is either wrong with the TV or their eyes.
As far as 4K goes, as the prices drop to mid range HD set territory then given the choice I would go for the 4K if I was in the market for a new TV. I'm personally holding out for an OLED 4K so hopefully, summer next year will see the prices of the LG's become accessible, even sooner if someone else manages to crack the production process...;):D

No it depends how far you sit from TV as I said i sit 12ft from TV which is 37in can't see difference nothing wrong with my eyes or TV if I had a bigger TV or a smaller living room it would see difference.

Thanks InsideInsurance good to know. Next question - which devices does Netflix suppurt 4K on?

Strider, you're way off! It's not a daft marketing term. It doesn't really have anything to do with colour either, it's to do with definition. Or if you're used to computer terms, it's high resolution. There are far more pixels and far more detail (definition) can be shown. A nice sunset image won't show this off, that's land, sun and sky. There isn't really any much definition here. Watch a football match instead, and look at the crowd, for example - you'll see more detail there.
And, of course, the adverts for HD TVs, and 4K TVs, do not show you how good they actually are. Do you think your TV turns 4K for 30 seconds or something?!
A lot of shops used to sell over-priced HDMI cables like that. Two screens, side-by-side, one with all the controls set to make the picture look awful, the other tweaked to perfection (and coincidentally using an £80 HDMI cable).

I'm not saying that 4K screens aren't better, but shops play a lot of tricks when trying to flog the latest fad.

I'm sure they did, but this is a TV they're trying to sell, not a cable, and the difference is obvious between an HD and 4K tv at any reasonable kind of distance.
  • here is a handy chart resolution_chart.jpg

I'm not sure this chart is right. We have a second tv that's only 32" but you can definately see the difference between sd and 720p in the normal seating position which must be more than 6' away. One of the most noticabe things is watching the footy where on SD closeups of the pitch are just a green smudge where as you can see the blades of grass quite clearly on HD - even my luddite dad can see it with his dodgy eyes.

That chart needs help text, that or its rubbish.

So its saying that on a 140" screen you need to be within 10' to get the "full" benefit of 4k but start getting "some" benefit at 16'?

It also says that coincidentally you "start" to see the benefit of X resolution at exactly 1 foot closer to the screen than you see the full benefit of the resolution of X-1?

Also claims that on anything less than a 45" screen you get full benefit or no benefit?

First of all what is the difference between full and some benefit and why does it only kick in at 45" screens?

Are they talking about "average eye sight" or perfect eyesight or something else?

I certainly dont have empirical statistics but can say that having LOTR on DVD and BluRay that there is clear picture differences between 480p and 1080p on my 40" screen at 10' which according to the chart should be identical. Look at a stationary character on 480p and then look at the same on 1080p and you see stray hairs moving in the breeze which are simply not visible on 480p even if you get closer to the screen.

Almost all of this years 4K screens will, most of last years wont as its down to the encoding. See https://help.netflix.com/en/node/13444

    People are missreading the chart.
it is between the lines that the shaded bits are talking about.
    Not just the shaded bit.

I wondered who produced that chart? It looked like pseudo scientific BS to me.

One look at his website and Linked in profile https://www.linkedin.com/in/carltonbale appears to confirm this. He has no relevant qualifications or any more knowledge/experience than any other home theatre buff.
