Can anyone help a non computer literate dummy?
I bought a new laptop recently which has windows 8. Last weekend my daughter came to stay for a couple of days and used my computer whilst she was with me.
Now when I first turn the laptop on it shows a number against a letter picture. Then when I log into the laptop there is mail "tile" which goes straight to my daughter's e-mail account and I can see her e-mails.
I have no desire to read the e-mails so I do I log out of her e-mail account? This does seem to be a good feature to be notified of new e-mails so how would I then put my e-mail account into the same place?

Sounds like she has connected your PC account to a Microsoft account, so you would need to disconnect that to get rid of her mail.
From home, go to settings in the right menu and pick "change pc settings"
Select "accounts" from the left and if your account has an email address under it that isn't yours, click 'disconnect'
If you want to set up your own mail, you would have to link your profile to a Microsoft Account of your own.
Steps on what you need to do are here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-8/mail-app-tutorial0 -

Many thanks for your prompt reply. I followed your suggestion and sorted the e-mail issue.0 -
I would also inform your daughter of her error as she may do it on a not so safe laptop in the future.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you
