Advent Roma 2000 Laptop Screen Flickering

A family member has an Advent Roma 2000 laptop. The problem is, when the lid is open in a normal position, the screen flickers with lots of fuzzy horizontal lines and weird colours.
However, when you push the screen far back the picture becomes normal and there is no flickering. As expected though, having the screen so far back at a strange angle doesn't make for a good user experience.
As the screen flickering stops when the lid is pushed back it seems the problem must be related to the connection between the screen and the laptops motherboard.
Does it seem the only way to fix this problem is to replace the entire screen or could there be another solution? Considering the laptop is almost 5 years old, it wouldn't be worth replacing the screen.

screen cable, it's attached at both ends, so is changeable without changing the screen....the problem will be finding a replacement..........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

How difficult is it to change the screen cable? Is it recommended to hire a professional to replace it or is it easy enough to do by oneself?
Since you mention the difficulty of finding a replacement, does the screen cable have to be designed specifically for this make/model of laptop so a generic screen cable wouldn't be suitable?0 -
you can diy, could be a bit fiddly depending on where the mobo end sits, and how much of the lappy you need to strip down to get access. They are normally model-specific to match the screen/mobo connecting points......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

There is no such thing as a generic cable for laptop screens, you'll need to find one for your laptop.

I've stripped down a machine and flogged the bits on eBay for twice what I'd get for them as a whole machine.0
