"Universal Mercantile Bank Ltd" Can you help me find them?

My elderly dad deposited £1,000 in 1970 with "Universal Mercantile Bank Ltd".

He recently found the certificate and supporting letter, and would very much like to find out where his money is now!

My google search has shed no light, so i wondered if any of you helpful folk had heard of this bank? Or if you can advise where I should start looking?

Hmmm. It appears that Universal Mercantile Bank changed its name in 1980 to Universal Mercantile Securities. And this company was subsequently dissolved.

Not very promising for your dad, I'm afraid.
