Don't try to make up silly excuses, they have heard it all before and will have the answers to hand.

Just politely say you do not wish to proceed and close the door.

Yes good point. I have since spoken to Citizens Advice and they said according to the 'Consumer Contract Information Cancellation and Additional Charges Regulations 2013 which came into affect 13/6/2014, if they gave no cancellation rights or pre-contract information then I have 12 months and 14 days to cancel the verbal contract.

I have been advised by them to ask for the company's contact details when the assessor turns up and then write to them, giving them my notification of cancellation, sending it recorded delivery, giving them a deadline to respond and saying if I don't hear anything by this date then I can presume it is cancelled. They've also given me a reference number and asked that I contact them if I have any further problem.

Don't send it recorded ... send it 1st class via the PO and get a certificate of posting. (That way you save money, the company can't neglect to sign for it [thus there'd be proof it WASN'T delivered], and the letter is presumed delivered regardless in 2 working days* - even if it went astray).

  • Regards to the cold call booking you should have received a customer information pack, green deal overview letter and terms and conditions which have to be signed and returned before the assessment can take place. And you have to be given reasonable time to absorb the information etc.So you can have them on that straight away before going ahead with the assessment.

Regards to the £85 assessment, sounds a bit cheap. You get what you pay for if you only pay £85 they will be in and out as quickly as possible and do the bare minimum. You should expect to pay around £150 check out the green deal participants register and find a local company.

If the assessment you have is not done correctly, or rushed you could miss out on thousands in Cashback or grants so it is worth paying for it to be done properly.
