I assume it was the big hole that opened up in the road

OP won't have been the only person affected

Correct, and it was on BBC website at dawn and indeed all over the internet within the hour. Apparently the OP made no checks before setting out and doesn't have / use TP on the car radio..

Depending on where you are going to you should arrive at the airport 2 hours before take off time and so you actually allowed 1.5hours for a 1hr journey with a significant part of that journey on the notorious M25

Most airlines open their check in desks 3 hours prior to departure now and recommend that you get there as early as possible, so I think the insurance might question the timing a little more. Not mention the fact that it's the M25 just outside of peak traffic too as the poster above has said.

This had been on the BBC site from late the night before and all that morning, if you'd have bothered to check the traffic before you left home (who wouldn't if they had a flight to catch?) you'd have had plenty of time to make the journey by train.

Oh I am aware that I made a mistake in taking the car that day.

Just curious if I could claim any money back?

So you admit to making a mistake but you still want someone else (who?) to give you your money back?

Who do you want to claim from?

I think you would struggle to make a case to your insurer, leaving such a short window

You may be able to claim on your insurance, if you're covered for that, but as the incident was so well publicised there's a good chance they won't pay out.

There isn't anyone else you will be able to claim from.

A claim needs somebody else to be liable for the situation.

Airline. Airport. Nope. Flexible tickets may have helped.

Central pot of taxpayer cash. Nope.

Insurer. Almost certainly not (you did have insurance, didn't you?). My insurer would cover me for my own car breaking down. But not for other delays.

Yourself. Possibly. But that means you have to claim against yourself.

The Highways Agency. Good luck with that one. If you can prove they knew they had a problem before it happened a court may support a claim. My non-qualified view is that you have no chance.

Not to mention the delays on the M23 due to roadworks for weeks.
