Payroll software

Hi

My husband & I are setting up a small limited company & will be paying ourselves below the tax & NI threshold, so probably £100 per week each. My husband was recommended to buy Sage payroll software for £100 - do I need this or can we produce something ourselves?

    Hi there

If there's only two of you and your apy calculations aren't too complicated, you may as well use the tax tables and Ni Tables you can get from HMRC and put it all on a spreadsheet. SAGE payroll is expensive for just two of you I think. Your accountant should eb able to help you.

Have you had a look at the employer CD ROM that you can get from HMRC. As far as I can remember, you can comfortably do basic payroll calculations (and a lot more on it.)

It will probably be easier to use than Sage for such a small payroll.

Why not call the New Employer Helpline (if you haven't done already) tom find out more.

    It's free of course!

The HMRC cd is OK but you are still reliant on HMRC's unreliable and slow online system for filing end of year returns, etc.

A cheaper (and better) payroll software is http://www.moneysoft.co.uk/pm_intro.htm at about half the price.

Moneysoft is far easier to set up and use than Sage and HMRC's own system and is very highly recommended by accountants on www.accountingweb.co.uk.

We use it for a few dozen clients and recommend it to clients, who are generally very happy with it and how easy it is to use and submit the end of year stuff to the HMRC. And no, I'm not linked to them in any way other than being a very happy customer.
