Hi all, just after a bit of advice. I have sold my macbook pro and was planning on deleting everything off it. However the buyer is a bit of a technophobe and doesn't know how to reinstall a new OS etc, and wants it working to browse internet etc
How can I delete my data without deleting the OS? its os x snow leopard

Go into System Preferences->Users and Groups.
Create a new Administrative account, in the name of the buyer.
Log out, and log back in again as the buyer.
Go into System Preferences->Users and Groups again, and delete your user account.
If you're feeling paranoid, go into Disk Utility, click on "Macintosh HD" (if there are two, take the second one, which is slightly indented), choose the "Erase" pane and then hit the "Erase Free Space" option. Unless you think the buyer is a serious hacker, don't bother.0 -
What securityguy said.
You could do a factory restore, format/erase the drive then re-install OS X but as above I'd simply set up a new admin account and delete your account. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
Id go with the full system restore - it removes loads of temporary data that's accumulated over time (I ran this prior to recent update to Yosemite) and seemed to clear up loads of gb of space...0

You don't need the original disks.
If you press Option N during boot up you MacBook will connect to the Apple servers and you can do a OS re-install.
You will obviously need a network connection, wireless is fine, and your Apple ID and password.
It won't install the original OS but will install the latest OS your machine will support. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
As per Mr_Toad, no disks are needed...0
