Money gone to wrong account?

Firstly sorry if this is the wrong forum, but wasn't sure where I could find the relevant help or information.
Last week my partner part exchanged his car. In the end the company owed him money as the car he was part exchanging was worth more than the van he wanted. The amount was £630. He asked my partner to write down all the relevant information such as a\c etc etc.
we left expecting this would be in my partners account that day, it wasn't and when he called to enquire they advised it would take 24-48hrs. Ok we thought. So 3 days later the money still hadn't arrived. We called the bank first to enquire, we were informed that bank transfer (the method the car company advised they were using) is now usually a same day method. This puzzler us. We called the car company who checked the details with my partner and it turns out they got one digit wrong, instead of reading number 2 they read it as number 7 thus sending the money to the wrong place. They then said this was not there mistake as my partner wrote the wrong number which he had not, we have the paper work and to us it's obviously a 2 not a 7. They are not accepting this and are refusing to make the payment again, they have said they have contacted there bank who are investing, but after speaking with a family member who works in our local branch, it would seem that trying to retrieve these types of mistaken payments is almost impossible. If this is the case, and the car company can't retrieve the money and won't pay us what were owed, what do we do? Sorry it's so long, I'm just having trouble finding help.

Yes, this is the case: Sent money to the wrong bank account?
If you have the paperwork that proves that it was their error, not yours, you can sue them:

Unfortunately if it's their mistake and they're refusing to deal with it, then small claims is about the only solution.0

Thank you everyone for your quick response. We will give it another week to see if they get back to us. They are a very small family owned company, so if it came to worse case scenario, hopefull a small claims court threat would be enough for them to pay up. However this evening we showed a couple of friends the paperwork and they both agreed that my partners handwriting could suggest the 2 be mistaken for a 7. Slightly worrying.0
