How often do you cull your wardrobe?

Taking inspiration from the 'How many clothes do you own' thread, how often do you have a good clear out of your clothes?

I last had one about 6 months ago and I'm already overflowing again but I don't think I got rid of enough as I seem to only ever wear the same few things.

In the next few weeks I'm going to have a major throw out as I'm getting purely new clothes for christmas, and I'm going to make sure its stuff I'll actually wear.

I try to clear out when I'm swapping over to winter clothes or summer clothes and storing them away. So every six months. I have loads of clothes and probably only wear about half of them on a regular basis. I also have some stuff I'd love to get rid of because I never wear them (evening dresses and fancy jackets) but each time I try to, I keep thinking that they are perfect for a certain type of occasion. Problem is, these 'occasions' never seem to happen but I know as soon as I get rid of the stuff, they will!

I like the rule that 'if you haven't worn it for a year, get rid of it', but it just doesn't seem to work with me. I also have a problem with getting rid of stuff that is still in good condition, even if I don't wear it and have newer alternatives. I keep lots of tatty jumpers etc thinking that they still will have a use for something!

I'm basically the same, I've got nice dresses that I've worn for evening dos but the only evening dos I go to are the same annual thing and I can't wear the same one twice because theres pictures every year so I keep them, knowing that I'm not going to wear them but just can't through them away.

I do try the less than a year rule but for some reason, I pick something up and think I'll need it at some point.

I think my main problem is buying things because I like how they look on the hanger, get it home, pull the tag off, try it on and realise it doesn't suit me. I know what does and doesn't suit my shape (hourglass) but I see something nice and can't help myself and then end up with hoards of clothes I'll never wear!

I sorted my clothes a few weeks ago, but do need to start and sort stuff between summer and winter as I've had some for years so need a change
    :T:T :beer: :beer::beer::beer: to the lil one :) :beer::beer::beer:
  • I clear my clothes at the end & beginning of summer& winter. So I clear out before I stash others away and then again when I bring stuff out.. It may not fit/ looking past it's best or have not worn it previous season- didn't like it but saved it anyway...

I bought two lovely cardigans last winter sales for this year and they didn't fit.. As gran rubbed her hands in glee at the wool cardigans she was claiming.. Lol!!

I don't usually get rid of anything unless it is stained, ripped, faded or otherwise ruined.

When collars/cuffs go on cotton shirts, sometimes the rest is still looking good and those things go to my mother for patchwork.

Occasionally I will buy something and go off it quickly, in which case it goes to Oxfam.

I don't buy anything which can't be worn at any time of day. I've got an Armani silk chiffon blouse I've had for years (bought from dress agency) and with black jeans and a leather jacket it doesn't look as dressy.

Sparkly lightweight scarves glint in sunlight and can be used as headbands or belts with jeans or just tied to bags.

Glittery clutch bags can be used in the day too, I just make sure everything else is casual and basic and it's the one stand-out piece and again what's wrong with sunlight on sparkles.

I've seen photos recently of Adam Lambert in an irridescent striped Vivienne Westwood silk suit jacket with black leather trousers and tshirt and lurex tshirt with ripped jeans so I'm not the only person doing it.

I saw a woman in a sparkly silver lurex mini dress with light tan cowboy boots and hat once on the Tube and she looked fab.
  • I have a clear out every time I move house. And as I've moved house 9 times in the last 15 years, that's fairly often!!

I am a bit ashamed as I tend to keep virtually everything even the things that don't fit anymore (because I will lose weight and then I will need them)
    On the bright side..
Have a look at what real 1980's and 90's clothes are fetching on Ebay!
I still have some in the wardrobe ..

I only get rid of stuff if it is worn out, stained or won't fit. I don't have a summer/winter wardrobe due to my year round travel for work and that I've no loft or similar to put the "off" season clothes in.

The clothes that don't fit get donated to a charity shop.

I don't like clothes shopping, I find it tedious. I have all the clothes I could possibly need, from ball gowns to pyjamas. I just need invites so I can use them :rotfl:
  • Every 4-6 months. I don't buy a lot though, so usually it's just a cull of basics which have worn. Or, if a major pair of jeans get worn through, then they go back to the manufacturer if under guarantee (3 pairs went on me under guarantee last year, one pair after 2 months!).
I try and replace my running trainers once a year. I've got some nicer brown boots at the moment, and hoping to resole them this year instead of buy a new pair.
Generally, I just look at the style, if it's shrunk / got baggy, was too trendy, not my style anymore, gone bobbly, got holes or marks, etc. I usually have a small bag to give to charity, and maybe once a year a small handful of items worth selling that I just didn't get on with.

I've got a pair of uggs I've only worn twice I'm considering selling. Why did I think they were worth it?!
  • Like many here I throw things out when things start getting too worn. In practice I dont buy many clothes and so it tends to be one in one out. The slight exception to that has been work clothes where I've been moving from ready to wear to bespoke recently but its happened to coincide with shirts starting to look a bit tatty.

The best method I saw for decluttering clothes was to divide them into their seasons and take them out the wardrobe. After you wear something you put it back into the wardrobe. After 6 weeks, if there is anything of that season still out the wardrobe it goes. One pass may be given to an evening/ cocktail dress
