Ipod Touch - IOS4

I have an ancient(by Apple standards!) Ipod touch with iOS 4. I used it mainly for Skype usually when abroad. Any way Skype stopped working - I couldn't log in - and after a bit of research I discovered this on the Skype website.
For that reason, we are permanently retiring all Skype apps for iOS 4 and below.

As a result, within the next few weeks, you’ll no longer be able to sign in and use Skype on any iOS 4 and below devices.

MY question. Is it possible to upgrade iOS on an Ipod touch?

Yes - but only up to iOS 6 - IIRC
don;t have mine to hand so can't recall process, but you can do it direct from the ipod itself, without iTunes ( I never use iTunes) if on Wi-Fi

Which generation Ipod touch do you have? Mine is a 4th gen and is running iOS 6.1.6 (I think; the latest one available for this device).
  • Depends on the generation, this the most recent version:
    1st: 3.1.3
    2nd: 4.2.1
    3rd: 5.1.1
    4th: 6.1.6
    5th: 8.1.1
If you plug it into iTunes it will tell you the generation and the latest version available.

    Thanks.

It is 2nd generation and plugging it in to ITunes confirms that it is 4.2.1. So it will be useless for Skype now.
  • Plug it into itunes with your usb cable and select update, and it will tell you if it can be, its always recommended to make sure your on the latest updates and also helps you use your ipod touch to the best of its ability.
