Some people are oblivious to all changes in rules and procedures.
Indeed, but there's also an element of people trying to make the (relatively minor, in reality) changes FAR more complex and far-reaching than they actually are.

Although Mrs OP's error that started the whole saga - forgetting to change the address on the V5C when they moved - is not something that's changed in principle since cars first started to be registered in 1904.

It's worse than that; the OP's partner didn't forget, she 'didn't realise' it needed doing. Oldest excuse in the book and it doesn't wash, ignorance of the law is no excuse. I agree with post #21.

If we call these still displayed discs 'invalid' the unaware will be even more confused as the discs might well be dated as not expiring until as late as 30th September next year.

I think the DVLA should have issued an instruction that they all be removed and binned on the 1st November 2014.

The reality of the situation would have been brought home to many more people much quicker..

Or separated out the change with physical tax disc and ownership changes. Stopping sending out discs 12 months ago with online payment, then make the change that refunds tax on ownership changes.

    No, not really.

Simple. Ignore mention of tax in ads.

Simple. Ignore round piece of paper in windscreen.

I can do that as I know.

Clearly a lot of people don't, based on the number of ads I'm seeing with it still listed.

Meanwhile, 78 years later, a lot of people still think "road tax" pays for roads...
