Check phone line???

My landline phone has developed a problem. There is no dial tone, can't dial out, can't dial in. The phone (cordless) is displaying a message "check phone line". But my broadband, provided by the same provider, is fine. Does this mean there is a fault with the handset?

Unfortunately I don't have another phone to plug in to check the line, and I don't have easy access to another phone line to pluc this phone into.

Is there some other way that I can check the phone/line myself (before going to the provider)?

You will need to get a standard corded phone to test. You should really have one anyway to be able to make calls in an emergency. If the power is out you can't make calls on a cordless phone. Your mobile may be out of charge and the only working phone is your corded phone.

As the broadband works it is unlikely to be a line problem.

If you have those ADSL splitters on your phone socket take them out and plug phone straight in

Remove ALL splitters in the house

If still same find the main bt socket , remove the 2 small screws from the front and the bottom bit will unplug. Plug your phone direct into the socket behind the removed panel

This is called the test socket , it's direct onto the BT line. Removing the front panel disconnects any extension wiring you may have in the house . If it's still the same faulty then you need to borrow another phone to make sure it's not your phone . If another phones the same then it's a fault between you and the exchange , it is possible to still have broadband but no phone connection as its split at the exchange end

  • Tried the above, I think it's a line problem. I'll contact the provider.

They will check the line to your home, free of charge , with any work needed likewise, but will charge if an engineer is required and the problem is with your own equipment. (hence the suggestions that you try another phone in your socket and possibly your phone at other premises.

Thanks for that, I'll go knock on the neighbour's door to see if I can check my phone on their line.
