Hi
Have you tried freecycle or your local NCT sale? I saw cot beds at the NCT sale for £10 and £20 and they were all Mama's and Papa's ones.
We got ours from an advert in the local shop it was £20 and was a John Lewis one which was £500 new (some people!) It had only been used for one child and was in perfect condition.0 -
i bought my cot new from kiddicare http://www.kiddicare.com/page/navpage?N=369
they sell cots for £79 including mattress, quilt and bumper but their cotbeds aren't anywhere near as cheap. hmm ... a cot worked for us, he's in a single bed now he's nearly 2 - it's been great when he's ill because i can sleep in his bed to keep an eye on him (he vomits a lot, sometimes in his sleep - eek!).
if you have your heart set on a cotbed then i can only suggest freecycle and NCT sales, but you'd need to buy a new mattress and they aren't cheap
your local NCT sale might not be before you have the baby though.'bad mothers club' member 13

I love the little Ikea cot, used it for both of mine. It comes in at about £40 with the foam mattress. They both went into 'big kids beds' as soon as I felt they were ready and I agree with Carmina Piranha, I can fit onto to my little girl's bed as well to cuddle up properly for stories etc. I feel cotbeds are a bit of a waste of money.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

i understand some of ikea's cots can now be converted into cotbeds.

I went to Toys R Us and haggled for the one on display.
Cot beds are great!. My son is a very tall 3 year old (over 100% on the height charts) and he has room for a while yet. Judging from that, a cot bed should be ok for an averaged sized 5 year old."On behalf of teachers, I'd like to dedicate this award to Michael Gove and I mean dedicate in the Anglo Saxon sense which means insert roughly into the anus of." Don't forget the classified ads - we got one that was spotless for £40 from a couple who were emigrating not long after their first was born. (they threw in the mattress which while we would never have used it for a new born would be useful later as an emergency spare during potty training etc - by this time the immunity thing would be less important and in any case DS1 has already used "strange" mattresses while staying with our friends etc). On top of the cost of the cot we paid I think £100 for a sprung mattress from Mothercare (although if you're more organised there are cheaper places!) because we felt it would last longer than a simple foam one given that we'd be using it when he was more than just a baby.
Of course s0ds law - we moved house and ended up putting a spare bad in his room and by the time he was two he'd bags'd the bed so we never got to convert it! Never mind DS2 will be moving out of our room into the cotbed in a couple of months so we'll still get our value from it!Adventure before Dementia!0 -
thanks guys
where do you find out about the nct sales? and do yuou have to be a member?
Id prefer a cotbed , just because its kind of 2 in 1.... millie went into a big bed after her cotbed decided to break lol. but i still feel they are better value for money than a cot...
im going to check out freecycle (i have asked on there) and also the classifieds. i was hoping someone might know of a catalougue returns plce as i got my daughters bedroom furniture from a shop like that off ebay. it was all mothercare stuff and cost around £700-£800 new and i paid around £40-50 for a bed/wardrobe/chest of drawers
thanks for all your suggestions!!Bad mother to 2!

Found this one which is a good price for just under £90 not used the company myself so don't know what their service is like. I agree with you re the cotbed my dd just turned 2 and is big for her age I think if we'd bought a normal cot she would be out of it by now, but she still has plenty of room,so she still has the sides up, as soon as she tries to get out we will convert it to a bed but I'm happy with her in the cot as long as poss iyswimBooo!!!0

violetta's is the cheapest i've seen to include a mattress (unless you still have millie's old mattress? siblings can use each others mattresses i've heard).
if you think a cotbed is best for you then i'll shut up about cots lol! for us it's easier to have a bed that i can lie down in, i've got a bad hip so i don't like to lean over roo's bed for long periods when he's poorly, and being lazy i discovered that i'm more likely to just bring him into our bed if he needed looking after and my feet were getting cold! so him going into a bed at 18 months suited us but not everyone wants that.
you don't have to be a member of the NCT to go to the sales but the members are allowed in 15 minutes earlier i think, and those who are doing all the setting up and selling etc. get first choice of the goods on the previous night when they're setting up. i used to be a member but am not anymore, i've been to 2 sales as a non-member and they have been great. if there are no cotbeds it's still worth going for toys etc.

I favour cotbeds as our 8 month old is such a fidget that he was waking himself up in the night hitting the sides of the cot and getting into all sorts of uncomfortable positions, he hadn't the room to move about.
He was in a cot until 7 months and then we decided he needed more space. Luckily we were given a cotbed from freecycle but decided to buy an expensive mattress due to his excema.
I am now on the lookout for another freecycle cotbed as if the next little bean is as fidgety as its brother, there is no point in using the cot again and i will offer that on freecycle, to give back what we've received in a way!0
