    Surely the best option is to not split up and force this awful upheaval on the kids. Her staying in the house just won't work. She will have to move to a smaller place and claim state benefits.

    Everyone in this scenario loses. Everyone, you, her, the kids and the tax payers.

    I don't know why you've split up and it might be that it's irreconcilable but if it isn't then you've gotta try before pushing the nuclear button
