car accident question

I was hit by another car they have admitted liability and today an assessor came out to see the damage,he indicated the it was uneconomical to repair and i was likely to get the cost of the car after that it was up to me what happens regarding the repair.
Am i right in thinking the minute they settle the courtesy car has to go back and i wll be without transport until the money clears and i can arrange for the repairs.

Usually yes. They will want the car back right away or after a few days. Was your car still driveable?
You maybe able to keep it or buy it back at a small cost and get the repairs done for a lot less than the insurance pay out.
How badly damaged was it?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Unfortunately "courtesy car" is a very badly misused term and most dont know what they've gotten into.
If it is a true courtesy car then the garage will want it back as soon as they find out that there is no work for them.
If it is credit hire or if the TPI arranged a hire car then you get to keep the car for a week after receiving the cheque/ bank transfer. They will send out payment even if you are disputing the valuation and its from then that the clock starts ticking
If it is a true courtesy car then speak to the third party insurer and they most likely will be happy to arrange a temporary car for you whilst the total loss is being settled0 -
The assessor said that they wouldn't take the car away they will just pay the market value ,so I keep the car get the money and I have to see to repairs.
The car was driven about 100 yds [was almost home when it happened]
There is a small dent at the side of the wheel arch [rear passanger] but the wheel took most of the hit and he seems to think because of that the repair would exceed the cars value.I have to wait for his report but I don't think they are even going to bother to fully inspect it.
It is a courtesy car [part of my policy] arranged by the insurance company from Enterprise.
As myself and the other person are both with Hastings they have closed my claim and everything is going through her policy. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Technically, if they are dealing with it from her insurance its a hire car provided by the TPI rather than an enhanced/ guaranteed courtesy car under your policy.
As that is the case the norm is you can keep it for a week after payment is given.0 -
Ive had a local garage have a look and they think it will need a new back axle as its quite bent ,approx £700 to do that and pull the dent out.
I will find out what the assessor recommends tomorrow. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Yes, I had one, and Axa hired it from Enterprise for 2 weeks. I had to push and shove to get it, even though it was included on my policy.
Unfortunately I did have a ding from a wall in narrow lanes round here, and Enterprise have charged double my excess plus £50 for having my dog in the car. I only needed the car for the dog so that was very annoying.
OK so some people do have allergies and I'm sorry about that but they won't tell a new customer that there was a dog in the car and have charged extra for valeting. They valet all the cars between customers so why so much?
They took my car 50 miles away to assess, and I had to drive there both ways to collect stuff that was I was going to recycle the next week if it hadn't been for the accident.
I'm sure that some people will think I'm a disaster, but I have just lost my partner and people are more likely to have an accident around a bereavement. :sad:0 -
Troublemaker66 - sorry to hear about your loss.
We paid Enterprise an extra £50 to reduce our excess to 0 while we have the car.
Still the Hastings saga goes on ! I was told to ring Tuesday to find out what the assessor has said about my car so after 3 attempts [on hold for over 60 mins in total I am told that someone has to read the report and I would have to ring back today !!!This is a system account and does not represent a real person. They have written off the car ,[cat c] they are letting me keep it and paying the value of it . We are taking it to a local garage Tuesday to get a complete breakdown of whats required, If it is just the axle we will get it replaced.
The hire car goes back the same day the payment is made [Monday] so through no fault of my own I will be without transport until the car is fixed and vosa have inspected it .This is a system account and does not represent a real person. The general consensus of case law is you are entitled for 5-7 days or so to give time for the funds to clear and for you to buy another vehicle.
The fact you're deciding to see if the car can be fixed or not etc is not the insurers responsibility.
Why not chose a garage that gives courtesy cars to fix the car?0 -

Case law or not Hastings have said the payment will be in my account between 2-5 pm Monday and they will instruct Enterprise that the car is to be returned.
The garage we use is one we trust .This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
