Damp around base of door

Hi all

Hoping you can help as we don't know much to do now! We've moved into our new house, we noticed when it rained last month a patch of damp came up the wall in the bottom corner of the external kitchen door. it dried out, and we noticed the brown sealant at that corner or the door on the outside was peeled away a little. It came through again, then this thursday gone we re-did the sealant around that section of the door. But it's not done anything! It's come through more now as well and seems to be passing around onto the next section of the wall. Any help would be appreciated! It's not starting to make the paint peel off :(

The step is a red (although mucky) stone step. Which is wet. For no reason which I think may be part of the problem. We haven't opened the door all day, yet it's wet. The other night i dried it before we went to bed, came down in morning and it was wet again but not sure why!

  • If replacing the small section of mastic didn’t work and as you say its come in more I’d suspect its not sealed properly I’d remove all the sealant down the one side and reseal water can track all over the place if it only happens when it rains then look outside at brickwork, pointing render and what’s immediately prior to the door paving slabs, concrete, mud etc is there a drain on the outside wall or guttering running down check them for leaks cracks etc look down the drain see if its sealed etc If the a stone step is just laid on soil does it extend outside the property even if not if its just laid on soil it will get wet soak in water if its really bad you could dig in a small French drain along where the door opening is If its an old house likely been doing it for year that’s why many people paint them and it peels off I’d probably remove the bit of skirting by the door if its wet it’ll only rot ?, mark damp area on wall with a pencil etc see if it gets worse if not or does so only proportionate to rainfall just leave it older houses tend to get a bit damp around the edges ?
