Valuebasket/Skrill payment problem

I've just bought a Sonos Play 1 on Valuebasket for £155 - during checkout you're directed to pay via Skrill. I don't have a Skrill account and as far as I'm aware I have never used this service before.
The problem is they've charged me in euros, rubbish exchange rate and a foreign exchange fee through my bank, so essentially cost me £166 instead!
To be clear, Valuebasket charged in GBP, and during checkout there was absolutely nothing about euros. I then received an email from Skrill saying they'd billed my Visa card in euros.

Any advice? Valuebasket say it's not their problem and I can't find any contact details for Skrill.

  • Have you researched Valuebasket? I think a little commission on the exchange rate is the least of your problems.

If you ever do get it it will be far more expensive than Amazon after you have paid vat on import.
  • They quoted me £215,99 for a Samsung tab 4, we clicked and bought they sent an email invoice for £215.99 but when I got my credit card statement they had charged the bank in Euro's which came out to be £230.45 after exchange rates and bank charges. I complained and after many phone calls and written complaint they say this is acceptable practice.

I spoke to HSBC and they cannot do anything about even though we paid with a credit card and the value was over £100.

It took 11 days for the item to arrive.

Further more they sent a foreign product which doesn't fit the uk plug point. I complained and apparently they say that's ok too.

Please save yourself all the trouble, These guys are dishonest and won't put things right without legal action and they are foreign with Head Office in Hong Kong so not sure how I will ever be able to resolve this.
  • I'm not normally so gung-ho with my online purchases... I'm happy to say it arrived in good time (and condition!) albeit with an unconventional 2 adapters for it to work. No import charges etc. Looking at some of the other threads I guess I'm fairly lucky.

To update, Valuebasket denied that it was any of their doing (naturally) and after phoning the bank and emailing Skrill, the latter say it's how they were asked to process the payment, despite VB's denials to the contrary.

I don't know why I'm surprised that companies like this seem to be immune from international scrutiny. I will pursue it to best of my ability and post an update as and when.
