Help with hibernate fault windows XP

Any Ideas.
Since I attached a WD one Terabyte capacity external hard drive to my desktop PC; every time I Hibernate the PC and re-start I get a “E:/$Mft write failed - data lost” message. The master file table data loss being the one on the external drive.
In an attempt to solve it I have optimised it for quick removal (no caching on the disc), closed all applications, and waited till the drive has completed all operations then hit Hibernate and still it gives the error.
It has its own external power (not powered via the USB connected to the PC). I have checked that the only hiberfil.sys file being created is on the PC and not on the external drive.
What seems to happen (In laymans terms - which is what I am) is when Hibernate is activated (while the PC prepares to hibernate) it sends a command to the external drive to update its master file table then before it has time to complete the update the PC tells it to turn itself off which it does half way through updating. The PC then notes that data is lost and turns itself off.
My OS is Windows XP SP3 fully up to date till Microsoft stopped supporting it.
I know I can still turn off my PC without problems but I really much preferred Hibernating it.
I also know I can safely remove the external disc before I Hibernate but that is so much hassle as I have to remember and do it and re plug and play to reconnect Id rather just turn off the PC.
I have tried numerous Google searches and can find others have the same problem but unfortunately no solution.
Thanks
