  • The evidence would seem to indicate no-one living there.

    On the other hand, there is a house near me that is in very much the same condition, but evidence of someone actually living there can be seen from the back. It's quite definitely rating as a very derelict looking house and would be one of my worst nightmares to own it, but..yep....it really is inhabited.

    Have you been able to get a good look at this house from other angles (ie in case of signs of life at the back).

    Come to think of it there is another house nearby that is even more derelict, but I see it has recently gone up on RightMove for sale and it comments in the details of how many years it has been empty for...but someone is obviously selling it now.

    Two houses I can think of back in my home area and you wouldn't know either of them are inhabited either (one of them in fact has had broken windowpanes for donkeys years), but I've seen the owner of one walking out the front door one time and had a couple of chats with the owner of the missing bits of window glass one.

    It's astonishing just how bad some houses can be...but someone does actually live in them.

    We have a similar property in our (rural) location.....in fact it appears to be growing its own thatch, lol! In the few years we've lived here there has been no signs of life, yet windows are open and it's furnished.

    Apparently the council are aware but it transpires that a bankrupt own(ed) it and in time I guess it will be auctioned off. I can't imagine it would have stayed unoccupied/unsold in some parts of the country as it's a very pretty house - and such a shame too :o

  • Had a similar property not far from me. Lots of old, abandoned cars and caravans covered in green muck at the front of the property amongst the very overgrown and unkempt garden. House had broken windows that had been taped up, much of the tape yellowing with age and not sticking. However, a family did live there and had done for many years and were regularly seen out and about. Never saw any lights on in there in the dark though but I did hear someone flushing the loo one day when I walked past the side of the house and noticed a small downstairs broken window.
    Debt 30k in 2008.:eek::o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free :)
    Mortgage free since 2014 :)

    If the empty homes office r can't help then you can check out tracing services - some do a fixed price trace and may be able to locate the owners based on the details you have from the Land Registry.

    It's also worth googling the names - something may come up if, for example, they have died there may be death announcements from the local paper,

    The local authority/postal checks are probably the better options. Others to consider from a registration perspective would be

    Any registered mortgage lender - unlikely to share much info but may be worth an enquiry/alert of some sort although it may be unmortaged of course.

    Any other registered interests worth contacting?

    And who acted on any last change re the registered title - you can usually apply for and obtain a copy of the application form for example although timescales may mean anyone who acted on their behalf may no longer do so or their own records have been destroyed as time elapsed is lengthy. You would have to Contact Us so we could check what we held etc though

    As I mentioned none may elicit any real details but may trigger a reaction that helps?
