    I'm in a very soft water area and don't bother with salt. I do use rinse-aid though. Mind you, with the dosage thingy set on its minimum level, I find a bottle of the Lidl own-brand stuff lasts me close on a year, and the dishes are always sparkling.

    When I used to live in a very hard water area I did notice a big difference if the salt ran out - I think it's pretty much essential if your water is hard.

    I live in a very hard water area and have a water softner installed. Surprisingly the salt lit up on my dishwasher - did refill it.
    I find the all in one tabs- expensive so just use the dishwasher powder. Occasionally i dont put any powder. Thats me being thrifty.
