Any Credit/Debit Card Reader Experts?

I posted this thread on the credit card forum about my shopping being paid for by a different card some time ago, but haven't had an answer to say if what has happened is possible from a tech point of view.

I keep being told that it can't have happened, yet I remain convinced that it did as I have the receipt.

I've since been told that the card readers in the store have all "had a refresh" & am curious to know how card readers work & if they can go wrong - can anyone enlighten me please?

I understand the argument that it isn't cost effective for the banks to investigate what has happened, & I doubt I'll ever get to the bottom of who paid for my shopping, but I'm wondering if the whole chip & pin is a secure as we've been told (without wanting to sound like I'm bonkers :D).

Thanks in advance.
& as for some happy ending I'd rather stay single & thin :D

Nope its not fully secure see the www.
  • With any technology currently in use today there will be vulnerabilities. Nothing is totally secure only difficult to circumvent and gain unauthorised access...

There has arguments for and against Chip & Pin including NFC for contact-less payments..

At the end of the day it is a computer and if there is any error in the logic within the software it generates errors.

Refresh usually means one of the following:
    • Hardware Firmware Upgrade/Reload
    • Software Upgrade/Reload
    • All above
