Employment credit check

Does anyone know what will show on an employee credit check. I'm looking for a new job but I've found a lot of employers want to do a soft check. I have a really bad credit rating and am worried this will affect my chances.
Thanks in advance

If you're honest about the circumstances, it will hold you in much better form.
If they're a larger company, they should have something in place to help if you've been upfront with them.💙💛 💔0 -
I have never quite understood why employers have to resort to credit checks. OK if you are applying for work in the financial services sector or anything money orientated, but why for example would a refuse operative need one?0

That, I have no idea.
My staff are only credit checked if they have access to the company accounts (which is about 5 from an office team of around 30, plus the fleet manager who isn't office-based)
I don't feel all staff should be, as I don't feel it's necessary.💙💛 💔0 -
even vodafoe, argos etc doDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

Hi Annie
A "soft" check will typically be screening you for any court judgments and/or formal insolvency proceedings, such as bankruptcy or a Debt Relief Order in the past six years. It won't usually identify more specific events such as missed/late payments.
Is there anything like the above from the past six years that contributes to your "poor" rating? Bear in mind that any credit "score" you may have checked yourself is not a factor in an employment check.

Hi Anniec19,
As Dennis has said, most employment checks will only see public data such as court judgments and bankruptcies.
However, were you to apply for a job with a lender that shares credit data, such as a bank, they might get your permission to run a full check. It would then depend on the company’s internal policies as to what they will accept when considering a job application.

Thanks very much, there's a ccj which I wasn't aware was happening...my car insurance company didn't settle a claim...but when I told them it was paid straightaway. I'm on a debt management plan so there's a few defaults. The irony is I work as a mortgage adviser for a bank but they haven't credit checked me since I started there in 2006 !!0

Maybe best holding of the job hunt till the CCJ is no longer showing as this will show up in a soft check. All that glitters is not gold.0

Hmmmmmm.....I did think about holding off. I simply hate my job at the moment and want to get into something where I can make money in bonuses/commission. My current thought is to go for a new job and if I don't get it then I've lost nothing. Will keep you posted, first interview is weds0

You might want to check your companies policy on disclosing things like CCJs, especially if you are a mortgage advisor. Some companies require to say if there is a material change in circumstances and if they do and you haven't told them, it would be a lot more serious than if they knew.0
