Veggie version/substitute for bacon..?

Trying to cut back on my saturates intake.

Any producer cracked this one yet?

It's the one thing missing from my revamped full English which is just as tasty as before but oodles healthier.

Sadly, I suspect that it may still be a while before anything even vaguely similar to bacon is on the market.

  • Have you tried the Quorn ones? I have found they don't have the crisp and taste more like those Bacon Crisps you can get. If you close your eyes and mix it in with your egg and bread you might get away with it!

Quorn bacon is my favourite, the fresh one from the chilled compartment, but theres frozen quorn bacon, frys bacon, shops own brand. Lots to choose from.
but if you still eat meat wouldnt the turkey bacon be a good change for less calories and saturated fat?

less fat and surely its everything in moderation?
  • Redwood do a version that is quite good.

Not going down the pre-bought route there is aubergine (eggplant) bacon.

  • Seen the Quorn ones but not tried yet. They don't seem to get very good reviews but then it's a tall ask.
  • Bacon was the only thing I really missed when I stopped eating meat :o

It's more than 20 years since I ate real bacon...so maybe I'm not qualified to comment, but I second the Quorn recommendation.

It doesn't look very appetising, but makes a pretty tasty "bacon" butty, with some home made white bread and butter. Try to get the refrigerated kind - I found the frozen version has a different texture and a slightly chemically flavour.

I've not tried this myself, but here is a recipe for bacon made from aubergine: http://www.theppk.com/2011/10/eggplant-bacon/

Not meat free but perhaps a touch healthier is turkey bacon. Mattessons do some and it's quite nice, I prefer it myself as I don't like all the wobbly bits anyway.

Might be ok if it's the saturates thing, rather than specifically a veggie need.

Is it really going to be healthier to eat artificial, man-made 'bacon' rather than just buying the medallions or trimming all the fat off?

If this is more a lower fat thing, then grilled or dry fried Parma ham is fab! Gives the flavour without the calories.
  • I like the Redwood's one.:) I cut it into thin strips and fry for a while and it's nice in a sandwich with ketchup or brown sauce.
  • If it's only the saturated fat you're worried about and you're not a veggie, then Mattessons smoked turkey rashers are the closest thing to bacon I've ever found and contain hardly any fat of any kind.

I used them when I did a re-vamped Full English for a visiting American friend who was Jewish. I had the same and they were delicious.

Or kippers? which are definitely the bacon of the fish world and traditional for breakfast :)
