Setting up or resurrecting a Skype account.

Two young friends of mine each set up a Skype account some while ago on their laptops(WIN7). I showed them how to do this only because I have used Skype for years. We exchanged messages on Skype to check it out and it all worked OK.
They haven’t used their Skype accounts for some months and when they came to log in both of them get the same message; that either the User name or password is incorrect. They ARE using the correct sign in details(I had kept a copy)
I tried signing in using their names on my PC and get the same results. (this PC works OK with my Skype name)
When their father tried to investigate, it kept asking for a Microsoft ID – which they haven’t got. Attempting to set up a different Skype account also now asks for a Microsoft ID.
Any ideas please what they must do to resurrect their Skype accounts?
P.S. I am aware Microsoft bought Skype

Had the same problem with my daughter's laptop over the weekend. Finally got a response via the skype forum that all previous versions of the software have been discontinued. You must download the latest version which is 6.22.81.105 from their website.
My daughter had to create a new microsoft account too. A lot of messing about but got it working again by doing that.0 -

Have your friends tried following the guidance "I'm having trouble signing in with my Skype Name or password..." at https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA109/i-can-t-sign-in-to-skype?q=skype+forgotten+password ?
Presumably they're using the Skype Desktop client and not the Skype for modern Windows version (which used to insist on the use of a Microsoft account - don't know if it still does).0
