Xmas food bank donation's

If this is in wrong place, please move.
Been on my local food bank web site and there is a list of Xmas food etc to buy. One is Xmas cake. I always make my own. Any suggestions of a reasonable price one to buy?

  • Aldi have iced, decorated 1kg cakes for £6.49, I bought one for my mum today, or un-iced for 4.99. They have small bars of cake for £1.79 unsure of size.
  • Iceland have decent sizes for £2 upwards
  • Tesco do a slab of everyday value cake with icing for £1.50 think its around 350g or a 800g cake for £4 undecorated . sorry not sure on your budget

Have you costed doubling up on the ingredients that you use for your own cake and doing it at the same time? Maybe that wouldn't be too much more than shelving out £2ish for a shop bought one. It would be a lot nicer I'm sure and quite an energy-generous, delish treat for whoever gets it.

the aldi uniced xmas cake is according to my OH 'Lush'! and for the price I think I will be getting another to donate to the food bank, along with their ordinary Xmas pud which everyone declares 'the best'!
I think its a lovely idea to give out special food bags for the festive period.

Gosh, you learn something everyday. I can see the point thinking about it, but what an awful world we live in to refuse homemade xmas cake:(

At work the collection is circulated with a list for tins and dry foods, I just never thought - about xmas cake..

    Sorry OP x
  • Thanks everyone. Have already brought two chocolate advent calendar's and two selection boxes. Need cake and mince pies. Not sure if going to buy tinned ham. Wish could give some fresh stuff.

Even nuts, dates and a box of satsumas would be festive and nutritious.

    It's heartbreaking :(

Thanks for the great thread sillyme673, it has got me thinking about what I should be doing and I have looked up my local service to see what they accept. So thank you :T

I have bought two advent calendars, 2 selection boxes and DD and her friends bought three happy meals from MuckyD's and there is a coupon on the side of the box for a book for £1 instead of £5.99 redeemable in WH Smiths, so I got 3 books for £3 :)
