If you look on the Citroen forum, it says that it is nearly always the key and not the battery.
When it's "the key" it's nearly always the battery contacts in the key. They're badly sealed, live in dust and damp most of their lives, and the contacts tarnish (even when they look fine).
It's what God invented glassfibre scratch brushes for
If it's not that and you're feeling adventurous, the next most common is the switch itself. These can almost always be opened and cleaned with a bit of care. If not then find someone with a soldering iron to put a new one in - which is a lot cheaper than forking out for a new key.
Re the batteries, look for Panasonic, from memory 7dayshop do/did a strip of about 12 for ~£2-3 with huge expiry dates (I think the last set I had were about ten years).
That way you've got a spare for your other keyfob...
When fitting the battery if you can find a youtube video it's worth watching, and be careful as some car remote keyfobs have a really nasty cheap battery holder that will likely break if you're not really careful taking the battery out (I'm looking at you Vauxhall...).
