Which of the above would you recommend I would buy, not sure if to go for the smart one (I do not know which channels this could receive, I have a separate thread asking that) or the standard version and just buy a now tv box, as this would be cheaper.

Any options on this would be appreciated, what would I get from the smart tv compared to a now tv box? would it be worth paying the extra for?

The tv is for use in a room with no aerial so I would only be able to watch catch up via the net on it.

Thanks

A SMART TV will not receive extra channels.

We do not all have loads of money :(

I didn't think LG was tat. I do know it is certainly not the best on the market but its not a supermarket special either.

Yes I know a smart tv will not receive 'extra' channels, what it will do is allow me to watch catch up tv via the net, as explained I do not have an aerial in this room. I was just wondering if it had any other benefits, I know you can use the internet on it but can't see any advantage this would have and in fact if anyone actually uses this function.

As the LG does not pick up itv player I am going to get the standard version as I would need a now tv box anyway to watch this. I can't see what benefit the smart part would be if I am buying a box anyway.
  • Always a load of TV's put on HotUKDeals. Some high end but also lower end.

You could have a look there to see those in your price range - then there are also loads of comments from other users who may make you decide to buy or not.

You are better off buying a standard tv and a separate box for the catch-up features that you require. Tv's with built-in smart features often have limited options, as you have discovered, and also don't bother to update with new ones once the set gets replaced with a newer version. Our LG smart tv doesn't even get channel 5 catch-up and we can't get any more updates.
  • There is a superb European brand, sounds somewhat dusty, but Philips makes fantastic and durable TV sets that have won many reviews. For example

Philips 22PFL4208T 22-inch Smart Ultra Slim Widescreen LED TV with Integrated Wi-Fi for £160

    - or -

Philips 2PFL3207H/12 TP Vision 22-inch 1080p Full HD LCD TV (discontinued by manufacturer) for £130
  • I didn't think LG was tat.

At the price point you mention, it's all tat regardless of the brand name used.

If I were you, I'd save up for a bit longer and buy a dearer set when I could afford it. Avoid Supermarkets and catalogue shops and buy from retailers like John Lewis and Richer Sounds, who offer five year warranties as standard.

Don't depend on the "smart" function.

I have a five year old SONY with Ethernet built-in, updated with the latest firmware, from about three years ago, and it will ONLY work with BBC iPlayer, and only TV, no catchup radio.

I have a three year old Smart Samsung, with Wi-Fi, and despite the Samsung website saying it does, does NOT have the Netflix app.

I would assume you will have a set top box or two, like a PVR (recorder), and a Now TV.

You may have heard that Plasma TVs are being phased out by various manufacturers. This means the remaining stock has been going CHEAP.

    December 2013, I got a Panasonic TX-P50X60B for £350, free delivery, from Co-Op Electrical.

In summer 2014, I got a Panasonic TX-P42X60B from for £250 from Sainsburys, they were piling them up high. Had a voucher for Double Nectar points, plus 1% cash back on the credit card, sweet.

They are NOT smart TVs, mind.
Neither are they Full HD. They are 720p, 1024 x 768 screens.

I love them, though. Have a look on Amazon for reviews.

There are some re-conditioned ones. I saw one without a stand for a really good price a few months ago. I actually have a spare stand, because the first one is on the wall.

LG has recently made a similar announcement.
  • As you can see elsewhere on this section, I bought a Samsung Smart TV which does have BBC, ITV, CH4 and CH5 i-players or equivalent. Only just got it but Netflix doesn't seem to work.

The Philips name on TV's is no longer European. It is owned by the Chinese now.

Having gone through the 'pain' of choosing a new TV in the past 3 months, I know how difficult this decision can be. The first point that needs to be addressed is 'what do you want the TV for'? Most reviews seem to be based on using the set for DVD/Blu-Ray movie watching. Secondly, you need to consider where the screen will be located. From this you can work out the optimum size and panel type.

Most TVs these days have IPS or VA panels. The latter offer more contrast (i.e.; deeper blacks) but the former offer a wider viewing angle. Some of the VA panels we looked at showed colour shift (cloudiness) when sitting more than 20 degrees off centre.

We have still to make our final decision. We did purchase a Samsung H6400 LED TV from JL but after 6 weeks we decided that we just couldn't live with the very bright screen and colour shifts. JL stood by their 'no questions asked, 90 day return' guarantee.
